| Few realize that Westport offers the most beautiful sandy beach in the state! Actually several beaches are accessible in our community. The primary beach fronts Westport by the Sea and is almost 18 miles from north to south. From Westport by the Sea you can stroll south almost 17 miles and discover some great beachcombing. Often you have the beach to yourself for miles. Heading North from Westport by the Sea there is one mile of sandy shore ending at the jetty where surfers hit the waves almost 365 days of the year. Paralelling the beach is a paved hiking and biking path with benches along the way and viewing platforms. Great for a 5 mile round trip bike ride!
Continuing from the jetty east, you will find the beach at Halfmoon Bay. This 1.5 mile beach offers calm waters most of the year and is a great place for young children to splash in salt water. Not so many sanddollars here but agates can be found as well as beach glass and other shells. Winter high tides bring some jumbo surf into halfmoon Bay and watching surfers is great here since you can get so close. At low tide there are also 4 Pocket Beaches" located on the bay side of the rock revetment that forms the north end of the marina. You have to climb over the boulders but the reward is secluded and sheltered sandy beaches with great tidepooling along the rocks.
The last (and least known) beach opportunity is Bottle Beach, which is located in Ocosta just a few miles east of Westport along Highway 105. Bottle Beach is a secluded stretch of sand on the tideflats of Grays Harbor. Great for bird watching, it is also a warm option if the wind off the ocean is on the cool side... since this beach is inland and typically warmer. State Parks has recebtly added a new parking lot and improved trail access. To see area photos go to www.windermere.com/tid52947
